Family Sharing is a Pro feature. BudgetLabs lets a single Pro subscription cover up to 5 family members sharing one budget. Everyone gets full read and write access — add transactions, set monthly plans, mark bills paid, the whole picture. The owner pays for Pro; nobody else is billed.
If you're on the free tier, the Family Sharing settings page will show an Upgrade to Pro prompt instead of an invite button. Upgrade from Settings → Subscription ($1.99/mo or $19.99/yr).
Inviting someone
- Open Settings → Family Sharing.
- Tap Invite member and type their email.
- They'll get an email titled "<Your first name> invited you to their BudgetLabs budget" with an Accept invite button.
- They click the link, sign up (or sign in if they already have BudgetLabs), and they're in.
The invite link is good for 7 days and can only be used once.
What gets shared
Everything that lives inside the budget: transactions, categories, monthly plans, debts, savings goals, bills, calendar, scenarios, annual events. There are no private categories or hidden transactions in v1.
What doesn't get shared
Settings personal to each member: their own subscription tier (Pro inherits from the owner — see below), their notification preferences, their biometric lock, their /settings/profile avatar, and their own private budget (yes — when you join someone else's budget, your original solo budget is still there, untouched).
Pro inheritance
If the budget owner has Pro, all members get Pro features (analytics, AI assistance, Calendar, etc.) for as long as the owner stays subscribed. If the owner cancels, members keep Pro for a 7-day grace period before everyone reverts to free-tier limits at the same time.
If a member who was previously on the free tier leaves the budget, they immediately lose Pro features and return to their own free-tier solo budget.
Limits
- Pro required. Free-tier accounts cannot invite members. The owner must be on Pro for any invite to succeed; the seat-cap trigger in the database rejects free-tier invites at the data layer too.
- Up to 5 members total (owner + 4).
- One Pro subscription per shared budget.
Removing someone or leaving
- Owner removes a member: Settings → Family Sharing → tap Remove next to their row. They lose access immediately.
- Member leaves: Settings → Family Sharing → Leave this budget at the bottom. They go back to their own budget.
Either way, transactions the leaver entered into the shared budget remain in the budget's history — your accounting record stays intact.
Privacy
Family Sharing is opt-in per invite — nothing is shared until you send an invite and the other person accepts. We don't share the data with anyone else (employers, advertisers, third parties). The invitee's email is encrypted at rest in our database; the invite token is stored only as a SHA-256 hash. See the Privacy Policy and Security overview for the details.
