Disclosure first: I built BudgetLabs, one of the apps on this list. It gets a labeled section near the end, and I've named where the other apps genuinely beat it.

The short answer

Want Simplifi, but nicer, and for the whole household: Monarch, $99.99/yr. Add as many household members as you like at no extra cost.

Want your spending to actually change: YNAB ($109/yr) or BudgetLabs ($19.99/yr, free tier).

On Apple and want the best automatic categorization: Copilot Money, $109/yr on its current offer.

Want free: EveryDollar's free version for a zero-based plan, Rocket Money's free tier for subscriptions, Empower for investments, or Actual Budget if you'll self-host.

Facts checked against Quicken's pricing page, Simplifi product page, and Simplifi support, November 2026.

Simplifi is good at what it does. It builds a plan for you, projects your balances forward, and tracks investments more seriously than most budgeting apps. That's why the reasons people leave are usually specific.

Five reasons worth leaving over:

  1. The renewal. Year one is $47.88. Year two is $83.88, billed in one go. If you signed up on the intro rate, the second bill is the moment to decide.
  2. More than two people. Simplifi shares with one additional person. A household with a teen or a parent in the picture runs out of room.
  3. You want a budget, not a plan the app writes for you. The Spending Plan shows you drifting. It won't stop you.
  4. You want to try before paying. There's no free tier and no monthly plan, so you pay for the year up front and rely on the 30-day refund window.
  5. You want to stop paying entirely. Several of the options below are free.

If none of those apply, staying put is a reasonable answer.

The rankings

1. Monarch Money: the step up, especially for households

$99.99/yr or $14.99/mo, with your first week free. iOS, Android, and web. Monarch says adding household members is free, and it doesn't list a cap, which is the cleanest answer to Simplifi's one-extra-person limit. A Plus tier, billed annually, adds forecasting and deeper investment tools.

If you like Simplifi's approach (sync everything, see the whole picture) and want a more polished version that the whole house can use, this is the pick. Monarch's web dashboard is the best in the category.

The catch: it costs about $16 a year more than Simplifi's regular rate, and about twice its first-year rate. And it's still a tracker. See Monarch vs Simplifi for the full head-to-head.

2. YNAB: if the plan never changed anything

$109/yr or $14.99/mo, with a 34-day free trial and no card required. YNAB shares with up to six people on one subscription, and college students get a free 365-day trial.

Simplifi builds a plan from your income and bills. YNAB makes you build it, assigning every dollar a job before you spend it, and when you overspend somewhere it makes you take the money from somewhere specific. If you've watched Simplifi's Spending Plan go red for a few months and nothing changed, that friction is the point.

The catch: it's the most demanding app here, and its investment tracking is minimal next to Simplifi's. Full breakdown in YNAB vs Quicken Simplifi.

3. Copilot Money: for Apple users who want it done for them

$109/yr on a limited-time offer, instead of the $119 list price, with a one-month free trial. iPhone, iPad, Mac, and web.

Copilot is the best automatic categorizer in the category and the most pleasant app to open every day. If what you like about Simplifi is that it does the work, Copilot does more of it, more nicely.

The catch: no Android app, and partner invites are still listed as coming soon. It also costs more than Simplifi in every year. More in 8 Best Copilot Money Alternatives.

4. EveryDollar: a free zero-based plan

The free version builds a monthly zero-based budget with unlimited categories, sinking funds, split transactions, and bill due dates. You enter transactions yourself. Premium is $79.99/yr or $17.99/mo after a 14-day trial, and adds bank connections, reports, data export, net worth, and debt snowball tracking.

If you're leaving Simplifi to stop paying, this is the most complete free budget on the list.

The catch: the free version is manual, and once you add bank sync, Premium costs about what Simplifi does at renewal. The mobile app and Premium are US-only. See 9 Best EveryDollar Alternatives for how it stacks up.

5. Rocket Money: if subscriptions are the real leak

The free tier links your accounts, tracks spending, and lists your recurring subscriptions in one place. Premium is pay-what-you-think-is-fair at $7 to $14 a month and adds unlimited budgets and subscription cancellation done for you. Premium+ is $15/mo and adds bill negotiation with no success fee and phone support.

If the part of Simplifi you actually used was bill and subscription tracking, Rocket Money goes further on that one job.

The catch: budgets are a paid feature, and at the top of its range Premium costs more per year than Simplifi's regular rate. It's a tracker with a cancellation service, not a budgeting method. See Rocket Money vs YNAB.

6. Empower: free, and strong on investments

The personal dashboard is free: spending by category, portfolio insights, and retirement planning. If Simplifi's investment tracking was what kept you there, Empower covers that side at no cost.

The catch: Empower sells advisory services for a fee, and the free dashboard is the front door. Budgeting is the weakest part of the product.

7. Actual Budget: free if you'll self-host

Open source, genuine zero-based budgeting, free when you run it yourself, or about $1.50/mo hosted on PikaPods (which gives a $5 credit at sign-up). Runs anywhere with a browser.

The catch: self-hosting is a real requirement, and bank connectivity is more limited than Simplifi's.

The labeled bias section: BudgetLabs

My app, fenced off so you can skip it.

BudgetLabs is $1.99/mo or $19.99/yr, less than a quarter of Simplifi's regular rate, with a free tier that covers the entire core budgeting loop. No trial clock, no card, and monthly billing if you want it. It runs on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and the web.

The difference from Simplifi is who does the planning. Simplifi writes the plan for you. BudgetLabs runs full zero-based budgeting: a dashboard widget shows whether you're in surplus or deficit, with a button to assign the extra or trim a planned amount on the spot. The parts Simplifi users tend to miss are there too: a Rolling Forecast that projects cash flow 1 to 24 months ahead, Money Leaks to find recurring charges and price hikes without a bank login, and investment holdings with allocation against your targets.

There's no bank sync, deliberately. Smart Import parses a pasted statement, PDF, screenshot, or forwarded email, flags likely duplicates, and you approve what lands. Free accounts get one import a day, Pro raises that to 100. Family Sharing for up to 5 people, with no per-seat charge, is a Pro feature.

The BudgetLabs dashboard: a balanced zero-based month — income, expenses, and savings cards with a $0 plan gap and per-category progress bars

The actual BudgetLabs dashboard: every dollar assigned, plan gap $0. See the full product tour →

Where Simplifi genuinely beats it: bank sync across 14,000+ institutions, if you want automation. Investment tracking with live quotes and TWR and IRR performance, where BudgetLabs records holdings you enter or scan from a statement. And Simplifi has an Android app; BudgetLabs doesn't. If that matters, scroll back to Monarch.

Want a budget you run, not one that runs itself? BudgetLabs does full zero-based budgeting, with snowball and avalanche debt payoff, at $1.99/mo, with a free tier that covers the entire core budgeting loop. AI Smart Import and Family Sharing are Pro features. No credit card, no trial countdown.

How to choose

  • Need more than one other person on the budget → Monarch, or YNAB for up to six.
  • Nothing changed after months of Spending Plans → YNAB or BudgetLabs.
  • All Apple, want more automation → Copilot.
  • Want free and a real budget → EveryDollar's free version, Actual if you'll self-host, or BudgetLabs' free tier.
  • Subscriptions are the problem → Rocket Money.
  • Investments are what kept you → Empower, or stay with Simplifi.
  • Just dreading the renewal → compare the year-two price, $83.88, before switching. Some of these cost more.
